The City

- Sarah Maschino, Poet

The Weight of the Light

Hungry eyes fill the streets

Thirsty souls, longing for a drink

You can hear it in their conversations

Longing for the antidote to their insatiable craving

Crosswalks and streetsigns

Not one direction illuminated

With salvation from their perpetual heart cries

Among this sea of passerbys

A few hold candles

They seem to know the way

Straining to hear what they say

I hear murmurs of the power in one name

Awakened to the scene before me

My own lantern suddenly grows heavy

So long I have been standing idly

Holding up the light I see the face before me

A lost soul battered by every

“Wind of teaching

and by the cunning and craftiness of people

in their deceitful scheming”

It’s undeniable

God’s masterpiece

Is this person right in front of me

I ready myself to answer their question

“What’s the reason for the hope you carry?”
